Announcement:

Prince Albert Summer Workshop 2009

"Skills for Historical Research in Britain"

Date: 10. September 2009, 9.00-18.00
Venue: Coburg, Aemtergebaeude

There is growing interest among graduate students in the pursuit of advanced study of British history and culture, yet the British archives which are central to much of this research can be both confusing and intimidating for the new researcher. The Prince Albert Summer Workshop will offer an interactive introduction to working in British archives.

Led by a British scholar, the workshop will focus on developing a range of research skills and will offer an overview of the British archival 'landscape'. It will introduce participants to the key finding aids which will help successful navigation through the archives and equip them
with the skills to develop a research plan and list of primary sources.

The workshop will also comprise a 'walkthrough' of a specific research project. This will allow participants to apply directly their research skills under the guidance of the programme leader. They will be able to work with documents and practice their source handling and palaeographic skills. Furthermore, the workshop will emphasise the need to use source material to understand the context in which documents were created and to help find further
sources.

The workshop should provide a solid preparation for future research in British archives, equipping participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to develop their own
projects.

The workshop is open to students and doctoral candidates who are planning projects which will entail archival research in Britain. However, there are only fifteen places available,
which will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.

The workshop itself is subsidised and will be free. Participants will have to meet
accommodation and travel costs themselves.

Applications should reach the Prince Albert Society (Prinz-Albert-Gesellschaft@uni-
bayreuth.de ) by email by 17 August 2009. Please indicate:
- your area of interest (period and topic),
- your university, degree programme and semester of study.
